Closer Look into Episode 50 with Angela Cotten

"Keep the Hustle!" #HustleModeOn"

Angela Cotten

These are words of wisdom from serial entrepreneur and successful realtor Angela Cotten. Cotten was featured on Episode 50 of the “Success from Scratch”  podcast, where she talked with Johnson about her career in real estate. Structured as a Q&A session with Cotten, Johnson began the interview by first asking:

What was your road to real estate?

“I’ve done a variety of things. When I was 15 years old, I started a new construction clean up company, and I had a crew of people working for me. That led me to start a commercial cleaning company, and I went out and hustled. I went out and got accounts, put my kids in the van early in the morning, drove to my jobs, I promised them donuts if they were good. I worked really hard through my 20s raising my kids, so I’ve always kind of been an entrepreneur.

Then, for about 10 years, I worked with the elderly in retirement and nursing homes, and I was a program director. My job was to make other people happy, and it was a great experience, and I loved it. Then, I got into real estate in 1999, and in 2008, I took a break. I built a very successful network marketing company where I became the executive consultant in the company. [I] still to this day get a residual income and don’t have to do much of anything. Then I went back into real estate around 4 years ago when Mike retired, and I got bored.”

What were some of the key things learned that translated into your real estate practice?

“Hustle. You’ve got to work hard, you’ve got to be consistent and persistent. And I stay in touch with people.”

How do you keep the motivation and the drive to keep doing those things?

“Every day I get before the Lord, and I try to get my mind right and my spirit right, and we’re all created for a purpose. What is my purpose today? What can I do today that will make this world a better place? Or make me better? Or serve others?”

As you look back on those past couple years of real estate, would you have done anything differently?

“I’m not really sure I would change anything because everything is a learning experience for me. I’m still learning today, and I don’t want to make the same mistakes I made before. Every experience and person is different and just keep pushing forward.”

Has there ever been a time you’ve wanted to quit?

“Absolutely, and I did at that one point. It was in 2008, went to work for Century 21, and couldn’t break into the market. And I turned my liscence in and said, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore. I’ve had a love-hate relationship with real estate.”

What makes you keep coming back to real estate?

“I can make a lot of money. I can help make other peoples’ dreams possible, I can help young people make good decisions. I would treat them like I treat my own kids, I wouldn’t put them in a house I wouldn’t put my own kids in. That attitude is what I love about the business.”

What has you experience as a mentor been like?

“This has been the greatest experience. I think that’s something I’ll always do is to share that with other people. I love to help other people stay motivated and share my experiences with them to direct them with what they need to do.”
