Advancements in cataract surgery technology corrects more than cataracts

The word "surgery" can sound intimidating, but when it comes to removing cataracts, Dr. Jeffery Whitman with Key-Whitman Eye Center says it’s actually quick and painless. Digital Correspondent Sarah Macias shows us how new cataract technology can correct astigmatism and decrease your dependency on glasses.

EYE DOCTORS SAY AS WE AGE — SO DO OUR EYES.

"In our 40’s this leads to us going into reading glasses, bifocals, but the natural extension of that, as time goes on, it’s a formation of cataract that can affect our vision at every distance."

SO WHAT’S NEW WITH CATARACT SURGERY?

DOCTOR JEFFERY WHITMAN AT KEY WHITMAN EYE CENTER SAYS TECHNOLOGY HAS MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE EXPERIENCE.

"One of the latest advancements in cataract surgery is what we call fim to second assistant cataract surgery. This allows us to use a laser to perform some of the most delicate parts of the procedure making it completely blade-less and it gives us the same wonderful results every time we use it."

DOCTOR WHITMAN SAYS THE MULTIPURPOSE LASER CAN ALSO TAKE CARE OF ASTIGMATISMS BY CORRECTING THE CORNEA’S SHAPE.

"With modern day cataract surgery, we are not just removing the cataract anymore. We can correct the astigmatism either with incision or our toric astigmatism correcting lenses and we have high technology lenses now that can give our patients a greater range of vision at distance, intermediate and close up at the same time while removing the cataract."

WHITMAN SAYS THE SURGERIES ARE QUICK AND PAINLESS.

"Anytime someone is having surgery they are going to feel anything? And with modern cataract surgery and anesthesia, we give you some gentle sedation, we’ll give you some topical drops and some introcular medication at the time of the surgery and our patients don’t feel a thing."

EYE DOCTORS SAY PEOPLE WITH EARLY CATARACT SYMPTOMS DON’T HAVE TO WAIT– THEY TOO CAN HAVE THE SURGERY DONE SOONER THAN LATER.
